How Could Our Election To Salvation Be Conditional ?

When discussing the Calvinists’ “Unconditional Election” theory, at times we are asked – how could an election be conditional? Notice three Bible illustrations …

In Judges 7:4-7 God elected who would go into battle (300) with Gideon conditionally, based upon who drank water by putting their hand to their mouth, as opposed to those who got down on their knees to drink.

God said in Joshua 6:2ff “I have given into thine hand Jericho.” So God had chosen to give the Israelites the city, yet remember they still had to walk around the city 13 times in order to get it.

In Acts 27:22-23,34b the angel of God told Paul there would be no loss of life on his voyage. But verse 31 makes it clear that that “election” (to physical salvation) was conditional upon abiding in the ship.

How could any honest person look at the following two passages and not conclude our election to spiritual salvation is conditional?:

· II Peter 1:10a Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure

· Hebrews 5:9 … he (Jesus) became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him
