What Are Some Activities I Corinthians 14:34-35 Would Forbid ?

I Corinthians 14:34-35 reads “Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.”

This Bible text condemns a woman speaking to (addressing) the church assembly. This would include:

preaching to the church assembly

• leading a public prayer in the church assembly

• giving a testimony to the church assembly

• speaking in tongues in the church assembly

• prophesying to the church assembly

• making any announcement to the church assembly (such as a funeral announcement)

• public reading of the scriptures in the church assembly

• confessing her sins to the church assembly

• confessing Christ to the church assembly

• even asking a question for the assembly to hear (verse 35)

In light of this plain passage, why do most churches allow women to speak in the church?
